Senior Counselor

General (Ret’d) Sir Tim Radford KCB DSO OBE joined The Cohen Group as a Senior Counselor in April 2024 after 40 years in the British Army.

His final appointment, between 2020 and 2023, was as NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) during a period of unprecedented transition back to preparing for conflict against a state adversary. In this role he led the design and successful implementation of a new NATO military strategic plan, the re-design of a new NATO Force Model, and the revision of its military Command and Control.

In a distinguished military career General Radford commanded at every rank to 4-star, which included over 11 years on operations. His formative years, up to Regimental command, were spent predominantly as a Special Forces officer in a Counter Terrorist role in Northern Ireland, as well as in Iraq, the Balkans, and Sierra Leone. Latterly, in multinational roles, he served closely alongside US Forces on three extended tours of Afghanistan; as the 1-star Commander of 10,000 British, Danish, and Estonian Forces in Helmand Province in 2009; as the 2-star Chief of Staff of the Multinational Corps HQ in 2012–13; and as the 3-star Deputy Coalition Commander in Kabul from 2015–16. Additionally, he was Assistant Director United Kingdom Special Forces in London, the Head of Overseas Operations in the Ministry of Defence, and also commanded a British Division comprising 40,000 soldiers in 13 separate Brigades. Throughout his career, whether in command or at staff, he has continually led complex organisational and cultural change on behalf of both UK Defence and NATO.

Among his operational decorations, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2007, awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 2010, the US Legion of Merit with the degree of officer in 2018, and was made Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB) in 2021.

General Radford grew up in Ireland and was educated in England. He completed military staff training in both the UK and US, read Politics at Durham University, and has a Masters in Defence Studies from Kings College, London.
