Mr. Nathanael Cheng joined The Cohen Group in June 2022. He has worked with clients in the healthcare, energy, technology, telecommunications, consumer goods, and manufacturing sectors, advising them on geopolitical, regulatory, and policy developments in the Greater China region, including mainland China and Taiwan. He has worked supporting multinational firms with engagement strategies, market entry, geopolitical risk assessment, and strategic development. He is a member of the China Practice at The Cohen Group.

Prior to joining The Cohen Group, Mr. Cheng advised financial clients at The Scowcroft Group geopolitical consulting firm. He also interned at the explanatory journalism arm of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he published a byline on the sustainability of the Beijing Olympics. Mr. Cheng has additional experience at the Hudson Institute, the China Desk at the US Department of State, and the Asia-Pacific Subcommittee at the US House Foreign Affairs Committee. In these roles, he conducted research in English and Chinese on geopolitical, military, international trade, global business, and human rights issues.

Mr. Cheng served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chongqing, China, where he taught English at a teacher’s university.

Mr. Cheng has a master’s degree in Asian Studies from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service and graduated summa cum laude from Hillsdale College with a bachelor’s in politics. At Georgetown, Mr. Cheng was the senior editor at the Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs, working closely with Asia experts on topics including Southeast Asia’s digital transformation and labor migration in China. He wrote his thesis analyzing media coverage and political themes of Taiwan’s elections. Mr. Cheng is from Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He is fluent in Mandarin and has studied Korean and German.
