Ambassador Burns’s Former career diplomat Nicholas Burns has joined The Cohen Group as a Senior Counselor. "Nick Burns has a worldwide reputation for intelligence and integrity, and he is one of the most gifted people I have known. He will be an important addition to our firm," said former Defense Secretary William S. Cohen, Chairman of The Cohen Group.
 
Ambassador Burns, 53, retired in April 2008 after 27 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. He is currently Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He was Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2005 to 2008, the third ranking position in the State Department. In that position, he shepherded successful negotiations to achieve new agreements with India in civil nuclear energy; negotiated a $30 billion long-term military assistance agreement with Israel; and served as the chief U.S. negotiator on Iran's nuclear program.
 
Before that, Ambassador Burns also served as U.S. Ambassador to NATO, U.S. Ambassador to Greece, the State Department spokesman for Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Warren Christopher and at the National Security Council at the White House in Soviet and then Russian Affairs between 1990-1995.

On Thursday, July 9, ProtectingAmerica.org, a national coalition of emergency management officials, first responders, disaster relief agencies, non-profits, businesses and insurers, co-chaired by Admiral James Loy, announced the release of an independent economic assessment of the Homeowners’ Defense Act of 2009. The study was conducted by Jonathan Orszag, a former economic advisor to President Clinton. Mr. Orszag finds that the legislation is an effective vehicle to help deal with the financial devastation following major natural catastrophes, to alleviate a potential source of shock to the U.S. economy, and to provide assurances to homeowners that they will have the ability to rebuild and recover in the aftermath of a massive hurricane or earthquake.

Admiral James Loy was presented the prestigious Patriot Award for 2009 at the American Security Challenge, a non-profit event that seeks to move emerging security technologies to market faster. “Admiral Loy was selected because of his heroic work on September 11th, his instrumental role at the Transportation Security Administration in preparing our government to respond and prevent terrorists from striking again, and his subsequent work in the private sector,” said Roger London, Chairman of the Challenge.

Secretary Cohen published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, in which he calls for increased cooperation between the U.S. and China in order to tackle important global challenges. These include the international financial crisis, climate change, North Korea’s nuclear arms program, and the international drug trade. Secretary Cohen traveled to China to attend the 2009 China Development Forum and meet with senior Chinese officials and business leaders in Beijing and Tianjin. During his visit to Tianjin, Secretary Cohen received an Honorary Guest Professorship from Nankai University.

Researchers from the University of South Carolina have published a study of Admiral James Loy’s leadership at the U.S. Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security. The study states that "Tensions remain in adapting to the ''new normalcy'' -- that is, the balance between national security and other democratic and administrative priorities in the aftermath of 9/11. Perhaps no one appreciates this balance more than Admiral James Loy." The report details Loy's efforts to articulate a set of core organizational values in three organizational contexts, offering lessons for public managers who want to enhance internal cohesion. U.S.-China Smart Power Commission Report Rollout The bipartisan U.S.-China Smart Power Commission was convened by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and co-chaired by Secretary Cohen. In its report, published on March 4, the Commission makes a concrete set of policy recommendations for both the Obama administration and the 111th Congress on how the United States can work with China to bring to bear their respective soft power to promote the global public good, while simultaneously ensuring the protection of U.S. interests. Secretary Cohen and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, co-chairs of the Genocide Prevention Task Force, announced the publication of the Task Force’s final report, Preventing Genocide: A Blueprint for U.S. Policymakers. The report was co-sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Peace, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the American Academy of Diplomacy, and outlines a national strategy for preventing and if necessary responding to acts of genocide and mass atrocities.
